Viarco

Viarco: A Legacy of Craftsmanship and Innovation

Viarco’s story dates back to 1907 with the founding of Fábrica de Lápis Portugália. After undergoing bankruptcy and acquisition between 1929 and 1931, the Viarco brand was officially registered in 1936. In 1941, the company relocated to its current factory in São João da Madeira, just outside Porto. Now in its fourth generation of family ownership, Viarco remains Portugal’s only pencil manufacturer.

In 2007, Viarco launched the ArtGraf brand, pioneering the production of watercolor graphite. Today, ArtGraf is recognized for its high artistic quality, offering a range of innovative products widely used by artists around the world.

While deeply rooted in tradition, Viarco is a forward-thinking 21st-century company. They honor their heritage by recreating mid-century designs while also embracing creative innovation. Their unique products include "the worst pencil in the world"—a non-functional dummy pencil—and the Backyards and Gardens of Portugal scented pencils, a testament to their playful and artistic spirit.
